In this post, we will see where is the Action Center in Windows 10, and how to open and use the Windows 10 Action Center. The post also suggests a few troubleshooting steps you may try if you find that the Windows 10 Action Center won’t open or is not working.
The new Notification & Action Center in Windows 10 Anniversary Update looks great. The Action Center is split into two major sections – Notifications and Quick Actions and lets you take a look at all the notifications from all different apps, and even the system.
Windows 10 Action Center
If you are on the latest version of Windows 10, you will find in the extreme right corner of your taskbar. Click on the icon to open the Action Center panel.
Here in the top end, you see the notifications, but it is at the bottom end that you can see the shortcuts, which the Action Center houses. Most of these are actually shortcuts to frequently used settings. By choosing any of them, you open the relevant Settings section.
Although the Action Center comes across as a simple tool, it is very useful. It stores and retains important notification for viewing at a later time. Since Notifications are an important feature that defines Action Center, it is essential to have this feature enabled all the time.
However, things can get irritating when you receive a barrage of notifications. If required, you can set the priority of Notifications or disable notifications. To do so, click the Action Center icon located on the right-hand side of the Windows taskbar.
Next, click the All Settings button, chose System and then, Notifications & Actions.
Toggle switches to ‘On’ or ‘Off’ for different app settings.
Quick Actions
In addition to notifications, Windows 10 puts ‘Quick Actions‘ in Action Center. It enables you to switch ‘Tablet Mode‘ quickly and access other settings such as ‘Display’. To choose which Quick Actions appear at the bottom of your computer screen, hit the Action Center icon and select ‘All Settings’.
After that, select System > Notifications & actions and finally, ‘Add or Remove Quick Actions’ link.
Here, you can select which quick action should appear under Action Center and when done, close the window to apply the changes.
Dismiss Notifications
Cluttering in the Action Center due to the display of many notifications can be minimized to a great extent by dismissing them. To dismiss individual notifications, hit the Action Center icon on the taskbar and hover your mouse cursor over the notification you’d like to dismiss. Then, click the “X” button to dismiss the notification.
Hope this familiarizes you with the Windows 10 Action Center.
See this post if your Action Center does not open. If you do not use this feature, then this post will show you how to disable Notification and Action Center in Windows 10.

Those who have a Windows phone are probably well familiar with the Windows Action Center. What this tool does is store key updates and security and maintenance alerts in one convenient location. This is a very nice feature to have on board — but recently some users have reported having problems with the Action Center after having upgraded their system to the “October 2018 Update”, version 1809. The issue was that the Action Center seemed not to store any notifications while showing that it did. How to get rid of false notifications in the Windows 10 Action Center? Find out in this article.
How to remove false notifications from the Windows 10 Action Center?
The way the Action Center in Windows is supposed to work is this: if you have pending notifications that you’ve missed, you will see a toast icon with horizontal lines in it — as you hover over it, it will tell you how many notifications you have; if you don’t have any notifications, there will be no lines in the icon.
The problem some users are reporting is that their Action Center icon has lines in it all the time and, when hovered over, displays a message saying, “1 new notification”. However, as you click on the icon, no new notifications are there.
There are several things you can try to fix the issue.
Option one: fix the Action Center notification issue via PowerShell
- Go to Start, type “powershell” and press Enter.
- In the PowerShell window, paste the following command:
Get-AppxPackage | % { Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)AppxManifest.xml” -verbose }
- Restart your PC and check if the problem has resolved itself.
If the Action Center notifications are still not working, move on to the next solution.
Option two: fix the Action Center notification issue via Background Applications settings
- Go to Settings.
- Navigate to Privacy > Background Applications.
- Here, uncheck Run applications in the background.
- Restart your computer.
- After your PC has restarted, go to Settings again and re-activate the Run applications in the background option.
Your Action Centre notifications should now be working properly.
Finally, in order to make sure your system is working properly and to avoid a variety of glitches and errors, we recommend you download and install Auslogics Anti-Malware, an anti-virus program that will scan your PC and timely detect any malicious items lurking in the background. The program is compatible with Windows 10 and can run alongside your main antivirus.

I’m using Outlook on Windows 10 and while new emails successfully arrive in my Inbox folder, I do not get a New Email Alert for them like I used to.
I did notice that there was a notification for it in the new Action Center but that goes a bit unnoticed. Outlook itself is still configured to “Display a Desktop Alert” but it doesn’t show.
Can I somehow get the old big alert and sound back when a new message arrives?
For some strange reason, Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2016 don’t always get all their notification methods enabled on Windows 10.
Luckily, this is very easy to overcome and you can immediately review the notification settings for other Desktop applications and Windows Apps as well.
Action Center: Notifications & Actions
- In the Action Center (in the bottom right corner, next to your time) click on All Settings.
An alternative method to open the Settings app would be to open the Start Menu and then click on Settings. - Click on: System.
- From the panel on the left select: Notifications & Actions.
- In the “Get notifications from these senders” section at the bottom, click on Outlook.
- If Outlook isn’t listed, you haven’t received a new message yet so Outlook isn’t registered yet as an app that receives notifications. Simply send yourself a test message in that case and reopen the Settings app.
- Also note that you must be using Outlook 2013 or Outlook 2016 as Outlook 2010 and previous have their own notifications which do not integrates with Windows 10.
- Make sure that you have enabled all notification options.
- Close Settings.

- Scroll down to the section: Message arrival
- Enable the option: Display a Desktop Alert
Make sure that Display a Desktop Alert is enabled in Outlook as well.
Desktop Alert for all emails in all folders
Outlook will only display New Email Desktop Alerts for messages that are received in the default Inbox folder of your account(s). When you are moving your emails to a different folder by a message rule, you will not get this alert.
To get an alert for all new messages see the section “Configure the Mail Alert to monitor al folders; not just the Inbox” of the guide Creating a permanent New Mail Desktop Alert.
Extra Tip!
If you also want to see an overview in Outlook of all your new emails that were delivered to all your folders, I can highly recommend creating a “Today’s Unread Mail” Search Folder.

The Action Center feature in Windows 10 might be familiar to Windows Phone users. It stores notifications about all important events like updates, maintenance and security warnings in a single place. When the Action Center gets a new notification, it shows a toast banner above the taskbar. If you miss a notification, it is queued up in the Action Center.
One of the issues introduced in Windows 10 version 1809 is broken notifications in Action Center. The issue appears to be related to the background apps feature of Windows 10. If you are affected, do the following.
Fix Action Center Doesn’t Show Notifications in Windows 10 version 1809
- Open the Settings app.
- Go to Privacy -> Background apps under App permissions.
- On the right, ensure that you have the option Let apps run in the background enabled.
- If the option is disabled, you should enable it.
However, if the mentioned option is enabled, but the Action Center notifications are still broken, you should try the following.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Privacy -> Background apps.
- Turn off the option Let apps run in the background.
- Restart Windows 10.
- After restarting your PC, open Settings again and enable the mentioned option.
- Restart the operating system.
This sequence should restore notifications.
Out of the box, some Universal apps are already enabled to run in the background in Windows 10. You may have never opened those apps, not even once and may not need them, but they are running anyway. Alarms and Clock, Photos, Store and some other apps are set to work in the background. The Alarms and Clock app for example is able to show you an alarm notification if you have set one when it is running.
That's why it is required to have the feature enabled and configured properly.
